The Missing Man Table

Dear Fellow Patriots,

Memorial Day is Monday, May 29th this year.  Beginning with the Civil War, it has been a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. The Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation invites you to recognize our brave Warriors who are no longer with us by visiting one of the local businesses in Gig Harbor and across the country who will be displaying a table in their place of business. Known as the “missing man” table, we see this as a tangible opportunity to reflect the true meaning of Memorial Day. In Gig Harbor you will find The Missing Man Table displayed at The Harbor General Store, Cutter Point Coffe Co, Flagship store, and The Wesley Inn & Suites of Gig Harbor

We believe that our community becomes a richer and better place to live when we can take a moment to show reflection and gratitude for the men and women who sacrificed their lives, so that we can live free. It is also a teaching moment for our children and grandchildren. And I can assure you, that every Active duty serviceman or woman and every Veteran, will deeply appreciate it and never forget this simple but dignified gesture.

The following is a description of the items of this special table:

The table is round – to show our everlasting concern for our missing members and friends.

The tablecloth is white – symbolizing the purity of their motives when asked to serve in any capacity.

The single red rose, displayed in a vase, reminds us of the lives of these Americans…and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith that their service was noble and honorable.

The yellow ribbon symbolizes our continued uncertainty, hope for the return of those who are still missing.

A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate, captured and missing in a foreign land or died in service to their country.

A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers why they were taken.

The glass is inverted –they cannot toast with us tonight.

The chair is empty—they cannot sit with us today.

The candle is reminiscent of the light of hope that lives in our hearts to illuminate their place on this earth.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and never forget their dedicated presence.

Thank you for joining us in this symbolic and most special reverence for our military who gave it all for our freedom and way of life.

Our Mission is to inspire hope and action in the Community and provide access to solutions for Soldiers, affected by Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury, and their Families via professional services, challenging peer adventures, education and spiritual devotion.

Our Vision is for every Soldier and their families, a fulfilled life within reach of their dreams: our hope is for every American Citizen’s heart, the will to make it a reality.
